CCI4*- L Competition

The CCI4*-L competition at Bramham is regularly hailed as one of the greatest events of its level in the world. This class regularly attracts the very best horse and rider combinations, including Olympic, World and European Champions – each one trying to win this prestigious competition.

The famous (or should we say ‘infamous’) cross country course is designed by multi Olympic, World and European medallist Ian Stark OBE. More information about Ian can be found on our Meet The Team page. The course is always challenging and exciting, and you will always find the biggest crowds around the water jumps – are they all waiting for someone to get wet?!

To enter the CCI, horses and riders must first have attained successful results at various lower levels, and it can take four or more years for horses to be trained to this high level.

Internationally there are four levels of competition, rated by ‘stars’. A one star (CCI*-L or CCI*-S) caters for those horses or riders entering probably their first three-day event, and is at Novice level, a two or three star is for Intermediate combinations, whilst a four star (CCI4*-L or CCI4*-S) such as Bramham attracts riders with Advanced horses competing at the top of the sport, who may go on to greater International success at CCI5* and Championship events. Badminton and Burghley, Great Britain’s highest level events are both at five star level.

Under 25 CCI4* – L Competition

This class was first run in 1983, but was then for young riders aged between 18 and 21. In 1985, it became the National Young Rider Championships. Champions in this section included Tina Cook (née Gifford), Sarah Cohen (née Cutteridge), Helen Bell (née Ogden), Terry Boon and Polly Williamson (née Lyon). The age category was changed in 2002 to be the National Under 25 Championships, and the first victor was Zara Phillips and Toytown – who went on to become individual European and World Champions.

This is the class to watch for the champions of the future.

CCI4* – S Competition

Following the cancellation of Chatsworth International Horse Trials in 2009 due to incredibly wet weather, there were a number of competitors who found themselves short of an international run that spring. With a new team in the Bramham Horse Trials Office, we took on the challenge of running a CCI4*-S alongside the existing CCI4*-L and Under 25 CCI4*-L with only three weeks to go. Although it added pressure in the office, the CCI4*-S was a great success, with over 40 top class entries, and it was decided that it was a great addition to the timetable and that it should continue as a permanent competition at Bramham.

This class has gone from strength to strength ever since, and in 2012 it was used as the final selection event for many nations (including Great Britain) for the London 2012 Olympics. That year, it was so popular with riders that we had to run an additional cross country day on the Sunday to ensure that everyone who wanted to compete was able to.

The cross country course is slightly less demanding and shorter than the CCI4*-L course, but is still designed by world-renowned designer, Ian Stark.

This class is a great class to spot the up and coming future champions.

Dressage for this class is on Thursday and Friday.
Show Jumping is on Saturday morning.
